Warning before shooting

The Issue

A few days ago my chocolate lab Creed was found dead on the side of the road in front of my neighbors yard. My neighbor had inhumanely taken Creed’s life by shooting him in the side through his guts. Our neighbor who knew who’s dog it was and knew how to contact us chose to do this with no regret. He claimed Creed was spotted in his yard chasing after his chickens that were not in a coop or pen, but rather free range. There is no problem with having a few free range chickens, but in the area we are from it is asking for something to happen to them. Creed only managed to grab ahold of one chicken and he only injured it, but was accused of killing another with no proof. I would’ve happily paid the man any cost for the chickens. Creed is a lab who is trained to retrieve birds, and he got loose from his kennel and that is what he found himself doing before his life was taken. I know there is a law to protect poultry and other livestock of that sort. But in many opinions this man could have made that call to us and given us the opportunity to get Creed and correct the behavior so it never happened again. I believe a change needs to be made, and if the dog that is disrupting your other animals should have a chance to be taken away before being killed. Because of that law I may never see justice for my Creed even though he was eventually hit leaving the man’s yard and headed back home. I hope this example will help people realize the impact this law has on good dogs that make one mistake. There are many examples of this all over Georgia but this one hit home and we need change. I know there is change to be made and it can start today. This petition is no longer about getting justice for Creed, but to help prevent further incidents like this from occurring. Thank you for taking the time and reading this post.
