For 20 years, Deep Blue Sea has been recalled as one of the best shark films ever made. But, ever since I've heard about how test audiences didn't like the original ending, and preferred something different, one of the movie's moral plot points has been tanked underwater by this decision.

The character of the film, Dr. Susan McAlester (Saffron Burrows) was recalled as a villain for her actions throughout the film, but it was already addressed in the film's deleted scenes (and the film itself) that she wasn't suppose to be. She regretted her decisions, and felt terrible after what she caused. And, for her to be the one who kills the shark at the end of the film made more sense to have her character arc completely resolved, and redeemed, other than having her die off for audience pleasure.

It may not be noticeable, but there are people out there that feel the same way about this whole thing. What I'd love to see is that in a future re-release of this film, whether that be this year for the 20th anniversary in 4k or not, is to have this ending be released. It's also fair to those who can see more rare footage that no one else has seen before, and especially to those who haven't watched that version to begin with.

It may be entertaining to what we have in the final cut of the film, but many people do feel that it might have not matched up the original vision the director had in mind, no matter what the commentary on the DVD says.
