Warning signs needed on A550 Welsh Rd to reduce the number of wild animals being killed
The Issue
In the first 9 weeks of 2023 at least 4 badgers and 1 fox have been killed on the Welsh Road between the A41 Chester Road and the A494.
There are currently no signs warning of wildlife crossing the road anywhere along its entire length.
Virtually all wildlife that moves in or out of the Wirral must cross this road and it has been acting as an almost impenetrable barrier for too long.
For drivers it is a main route that connects Liverpool with the North Wales coast via the M53 so it is an extremely busy road. In places the hedges are very close to the roadside which means any animals about to cross cannot be seen until the last second, which is too late. The speed limit is 50mph.
Warning signs would help to encourage drivers to use a little more caution - raising their awareness and reducing speed, enabling them to avoid an animal that might dart out.
Immediate action from the local council is required to prevent local wildlife populations from being further decimated. It is possible that 3 of the badgers killed came from the same sett - any more could see the whole clan being wiped out.
Spring and summer is breeding season - cubs are dependent on their mothers, so 1 badger killed could have the knock on effect of several dying back at the sett.
We need warning signs now and we will use this petition to demonstrate the strength of feeling to the local council !!
