Make 4017 suburb plastic straw free

We the signatures of this petition request that the businesses of the 4017 suburb take some action to collectively help to reduce the impact of the plastic straw on the environment.

While we would love to make the 4017 suburb a straw free suburb, we understand this may not be feasible for your business immediately, therefore we are suggesting two options for this, which we think will be simple to implement.

1) Look to transitioning to a re-usable or more environmentally friendly option, such as paper or bamboo straws to replace the plastic straws in your venue

2) Adopting a policy in your venue of giving straws out on request only. A move that can reduce straw use in a venue by up to 50% immediately.

Why Straws? A small, plastic straw - It's something that comes with most drinks that we order, from soft drinks to even a glass of water. Though at first this small straw may not seem like a lot, when its usage is added up, plastic straws create a big problem for the environment. Over 10 million plastic straws are used in Australia each and every day, contributing to the estimated 150 million tonnes of plastic in our oceans today. By 2050 experts estimate there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Worldwide, there are approximately 500 Million straws used daily which equates to approx. 527 Humpback whales worth in plastic waste just on straws PER DAY!

Why straws suck:
" Plastic straws can't easily be recycled
" Most contain BPA
" In hot conditions they can let off a harmful toxin which is then ingested
" They are not biodegradable, and once disposed into land fill they will never be fully off the earth
" They can be ingested by Marine and other terrestrial animals, giving them a slow painful death - As of early 2018, data from Ocean Conservancy's TIDES system shows us that straws/stirrers are the 11th most found ocean trash in cleanups, making up about 3% of recovered trash.
" Fossil fuels are used to make plastic
" Most people use one straw for one drink for ten minutes or less
" Most of all they are not needed! Plastic straws are a luxury, I am very sure that we can all survive without plastic straws.
With this in mind, we would like to ask you as a business in the 4017 area to consider the alternative options mentioned above with the aim to make our suburb straw free.
