Children of Puerto Rico should not be starving during this pandemic

The Issue

Puerto Rico is in confinement like many countries in the world to be able to stop the pandemic that afflicts us all, COVID-19. As Puerto Rico is a  U.S. territory, it has implemented a series of initiatives and our island have the opportunity to receive federal funds.

Yesterday, our Resident Commissioner Jennifer González, communicated on social media that approximately 200 billion was approved. These funds are to feed our children with the public school system. It has been mentioned before on several occasions that many of these children only have access to breakfast and lunch through the school cafeterias. The Governor of Puerto Rico Wanda Vazquez Garzed has not wanted to reopen the school cafeteria for the public schools so as not to expose employees. Still, as our Resident Commissioner says, there are other means, viable methods where these children can benefit from this help. It is unacceptable that this occurs when there is a program in which they can benefit. I call on everyone as citizens and parents to ensure that no child goes hungry in the face of this pandemic in Puerto Rico.
