I have sent a letter to the WCSD from their contact us tab. I will post a response once I get one. Here is the letter I sent: To whom it may concern, I am trying to find out who or where I have to go to talk about an internet connection issue with Loganville High School. At Loganville, there is a new restrict that denies any personal electronic devices to connect to the internet. However, it has hindered the learning process for many students (me included). I signed up for Georgia Virtual School program last year. The way I attend my online class is by going to the school's library and using the schools computers. By doing this, I am required to sign in through the media center specialists to be accounted for and follow a strict schedule every day in order to keep up with my class. This doesn't cause a problem, unless a class signs up to use the library's computers. The library consists of twenty-eight working computers. There are ten students in my 4th period Georgia Virtual (GAVS) class. If a class of twenty students comes in to work on the computers, someone - either from GAVS or the incoming class - will have no way to work on their assignment. The third of my online course I spent sitting in the library, unable to work on my class. After that day, I have brought in my laptop to work on. However, because of the restrictions on personal devices, there is no physical way for me to use it for my course. The system requires a username and password, but the students do not know the username and password to access it; even the media center specialists don't know the password. This isn't just an issue with the GAVS student, either. Some students choose to bring their own iPad to school rather than using the iPads provided by the school. These students are unable to use the internet for strictly school purposes, because they own them. Every day, I witness at least fifteen of the exact same students come in with their iPads in order to be able to access the internet again. It takes about five or ten minutes to help each person. With only two media specialists, I've seen people miss thirty minutes of class time in order to have their iPads fixed. Because these students have to get them fixed every day, they can lose up to 2.5 hours of class time each week. My class is an online Spanish class that requires you to use a computer. Not only does it have videos my iPad is unable to play, but it requires you to use a Dropbox system to turn in your work and requires you open a word document to write down what Spanish words you hear. The school iPad lacks the technology to allow me to work from my iPad. Last year, students could connect any device they had to the internet. However, if you try to use your phone for social media, it won't work. The schools blocking system for computers - which blocks Facebook, Twitter etc. - is also applied to their phone. The students can only use the school WiFi for educational purposes. It has also been reported some schools use jamming devices to stop students from having signal or being able to use data in class. This has hindered students contact with their parents. If they stay after school, some students have had major troubles contacting their parents in order to do so. If an emergency, inside or outside of school, occurs, there is no way to contact help from a safe location. If phone use is such a problem in the classrooms, I believe the teachers have the responsibility to give punishment to the students who are breaking the rules. The teacher could collect phones at the beginning of class or give detentions to people who do use them in class. However, disconnecting students from the internet is causing may more issues rather than solving them. I appreciate your time and hope to hear a response very soon. Sincerely, Taylor Williams
