I am the mother of a special needs daughter. Although we have overcome many challenges on our journey, one of the challenges we continue to face is finding appropriate public restroom facilities that can accommodate an older special needs child.  My daughter is currently 7 years old and still requires diapers and incontinence supplies, as a large portion of the special-needs population does.

Most public bathroom facilities offer a plastic changing table that will pull down from the wall, and is most appropriate for smaller babies and children.  In most cases, the maximum weight is around 25 to 30 pounds. Even in the restroom facilities that are clearly marked family restrooms and companion restrooms, they still do not offer adequate support for larger special needs individuals.

Just this past summer, we traveled to Walt Disney World for our family vacation. During both the travel portion and vacation itself, my daughter had several accidents and required changing and clean up in several WDW parks. I was forced to lay paper towels on the floor of the bathroom as there were no facilities that could accommodate a larger child.

I’m starting this petition and specifically asking Walt Disney World and International Airports to evaluate their restroom facilities and make appropriate and necessary changes to accommodate the older and larger special-needs population.  I also ask that once changes in accommodations are made, they are well communicated to allow caregivers to locate the facilities quickly.

Thank you in advance for your support and consideration.
