On Monday, April 29th, 2019, an email was sent out to all residential students which said the following:
"Dear Walsh University Residential Students,
Thank you for a wonderful and rewarding year and your contribution to making residential life on campus a truly enriching one. We very much look forward to the year ahead!
I wanted to provide you with an update on the housing plan moving forward. During our housing selection meetings in February, we provided students with an opportunity to share direct feedback regarding planned changes to residential housing and the move towards single-gender residence halls in Seanor and Menard Halls. During these sessions, we received constructive feedback from those who were for and opposed to this change.
After careful consideration with and further discussion with students, residence life staff, and Walsh University President Richard Jusseaume, we have decided on the following parameters:
Seanor Hall
2nd and 3rd floors – Men
1st floor – Women
Menard Hall
2nd and 3rd floors – Women
1st floor – Men
Betzler Tower
2nd, 3rd and 4th floors - Men
Adjustments may be made once final numbers are in for freshmen residential students.
Please know that we are committed to providing a transformational experience during your time at Walsh University and welcome feedback."
This email walks back the changes. These changes are more consistent with the existing housing policies, and will not relegate members of the opposite sex to different buildings entirely. These policies overall make more sense and are more in line with Catholic teachings.
I would like to thank all who signed, whether students, alumni, or community members. Your voices truly made this victory possible. I would also like to thank the administration at Walsh University, especially President Jusseaume. Through the modification of this policy, they have been accommodating to what the students truly want. Thank you! Our voices matter! Let us all continue to make Walsh a better place!
