Remove the "Cool story, babe, now make me a sandwich" shirt from all shelves
The Issue
Walmart is apparently really down with sexism. Many of us have seen the "Cool story, babe, now make me a sandwich" shirts that they sell in the "young men's" department. I was really upset the first time I consciously acknowledged that they were in the store. I had probably walked by them more times than I can count without realizing they were there. When I did notice them, though, I lept into action. It took probably two weeks, but I got the shirts removed from my store last summer. So, there I go, off to college. I came back, though, and so did the shirts. I was disgusted. What customer service.
Let Walmart know that we won't stand for their intentional, institutionalized sexism and misogyny. They are literally selling a product that encourages a disrespectful, dominating, and all-around not good societal view of women (one that already isn't as good as it should be, I might add). It enforces age-old and tired-out gender roles that most of us now understand to be nothing more than an attempt to make women submissive to the order of men... Just because we identify as women. I could go on and on, but the fact of the matter is that I don't have to. Women endure (and are often forced to tolerate) misogynistic microagressions (and regular aggressions) every single day, and we don't need it coming from the place we buy food. Going into Walmart is usually stressful enough. This affects men, too. It paints men in a negative light for many reasons. The point is that we don't want this to be a symbol or generalization of men as a whole. We know you can be better than that. And for those of you who will write this off as a petty, silly, or insignificant issue (it's just a shirt!! who cares!!!), please take a moment to realize why this matters. It may seem like a small issue, but it's sending a message. It's taking a stand. It's just one of many ways that we can spread awareness about this issue and the greater issues that surround it. This is a fairly popular/common shirt. Start the conversation. Educate people, educate yourselves. Do something.
