Access to fresh food in Malton

Access to fresh food in Malton
The Issue
Wal-Mart in Malton is choosing to leave the community. An abrupt decision that causes the loss of a large employer and access to fresh food. Residents will be guided to locations that are not walking distance away, leaving many vulnerable members of the community without convenient access to general goods and merchandise. The Malton community comprises of many young families and elderly individuals that do not have access to motor vehicles. Coupled with the ongoing covid-19 pandemic, accessing fresh food will become even more ounerous as there will be only 1 remaining fresh food retailer in the community of nearly 40000 residents.
Wal-Mart was the anchor in part of a master re-development plan of Westwood Square completed in 2013. They are now exiting this agreement less than 10 years post redevelopment.
What is next for Malton? An oft forgotten about corner of Mississauga, isolated from services, shopping and business. We understand business decisions need to be made but residents have a right to access fresh food, general merchandise and affordable retail.
Signing this petition will at the minimum create visibility and a conversation about access to fresh food.
