Accept Apple Pay and Google Wallet, give customers a choice
The Issue
Dear Walmart, Best Buy, CVS, Rite-Aid and other members of the Merchant Customer Exchange (MCX),
We, as consumers, are tired of you making additional profits and padding your already fat wallets at our expense, especially when it takes the freedom of choice away from us. Your decision to exclude your customers from using Apple Pay or Google Wallet, or any other form of digital payment made via NFC technology, especially when you already have credit card terminals that accept that form of payment, shows your greed, failure and unwillingness to serve your customers.
Both Google Wallet and Apply Pay give their users the ability to pay in a manner that is operational NOW and in the case of Apple Pay, is more secure, fast and private, compared to your new CurrentC QR code “concept.” This option to not participate or to turn off credit card terminals that are “already operational” because you're not prepared to support the service, is a selfish reason, a reason that you know will make YOU more money in the end, not us.
This sounds very much like big business stressing to its customers to "go green" and chose paperless billing. But let's face it, it's not about going green, it's about the millions of dollars YOU SAVE by not buying paper or printing with ink. You bombard customers with emails telling them to go paperless, only to save you millions, while not offering the customer anything in return, other than it feels good to “go green.”
Now you want to force your new payment method CurrentC on us, which is no were near as secure as Apple Pay/Google Wallet, you want to cut us off from what should be a free, private and super secure service. As the U.S. prepares for the arrival of the EMV chip standard in 2015, you know most of the new credit card terminals will accept NFC payments, but you and your dictatorship thinking, choose to ban customers from having this choice. You don’t like this idea because it doesn't help your bottom-line, it helps us, it lets us choose, it lets us feel more secure.
Whatever happened to the idea of "the customer is always right?" Without customers you have no business, without us, you become extinct, like Circuit City. So we, as a group, ask that you open up your credit card terminals, allow us to have the choice as to how we wish to pay. We are not asking the members of the Merchant Customer Exchange (MCX) to stop moving forward with CurrentC, but to give us the opportunity to choose how we would like to pay for our goods, without having to be dictated into which form of payment you think is right for us.
What we can’t understand, is that it costs you nothing more to accept a payment via Apple Pay or Google Wallet as it would to take a normal credit card. So why is it customers choosing to pay via a device equipped with NFC have to suffer, while those who pay conventionally do not?
