The original plan for the Community Center included pool facilities. A survey done at the time found that a community pool was considered the #1 desired recreational option but it was never actualized. The community center property is currently underutilized, a situation made worse by the recent cessation of some after-school programming. At the same time, a presentation to the Board of County Commissioners on Statistics and Health Risk Factors for Wakulla Teenagers indicated that Wakulla County is doing significantly worse than other Florida counties on several critical measures, such as drug use and sexually responsible behaviors. We as a community have to come together and create another recreational outlet for our children while at the same time improving the health of our overall community. A community pool creates new opportunities for our county. It would allow our youth to compete in swim teams. Having the ability to host swim meets would increase recreational tourism to Wakulla County substantially adding to our economic development. A community pool would also aid our seniors and others who live in the community and struggle with mobility issues eased through water aerobics. Together we can push this plan forward.
