The Reform-led administration’s decision to slash Wakefield's school uniform support scheme to an absolute bare minimum is incredibly disappointing. As a former Equality Champion for the council, this choice deeply shocks me. It completely ignores our local reality. Currently, 22% of children in Wakefield live in relative poverty, with the figure spiking to between 31% and 39% in wards like Hemsworth, Wakefield North, and Wakefield East.

The move to cap support strictly at the Free School Meals threshold overlooks many families who are struggling but don't qualify for this assistance. These families are forced to make impossible choices between purchasing essential educational supplies or putting food on the table. It's a choice no parent should have to make, particularly when the cost of living is rising, and inflation is stretching household budgets to their breaking point.

Education is a right, not a privilege, and every child deserves to start the school year with dignity and the necessary resources to succeed. By restoring the school uniform support scheme and providing free school supplies, we would be taking a significant step towards ensuring equality in education. It will not only lift the immediate financial burden from struggling families but will promote social mobility and long-term community well-being.

Wakefield Metropolitan District Council has the power to reverse this cut and implement a more compassionate, inclusive approach that considers the well-being of all Wakefield's children.
