Pelican crossing on Wakefield Road, Ackworth, West Yorkshire

Wakefield Road in Ackworth is a one-mile stretch of the A638 towards Wakefield. The road is very busy and is one of the main entrances and exits in to and out of Ackworth.
This stretch of road has pubs, businesses and houses along it and is also close to Bell Lane Primary School and Oakfield Park Secondary School so is frequented by children on a daily basis. Strangely for this type of road with the amount of traffic, both on the roads and pavements, there are no formal crossing points, just islands at certain points and is therefore very difficult to cross at busy times.
Ackworth has at least one visually impaired man, a gentleman in his 80s who needs to cross this road regularly and currently struggles to do this safely. There are also many elderly and disabled residents in the village who feel unsafe on this stretch of road because of the lack of adequate crossing facilities.
This petition has been set up to ask that Wakefield Council put proper care and attention in to making safe crossing of this busy highway a priority for the safety of the residents of Ackworth. The signatories herewith request that one or more safe crossing points (such as a pelican crossings or similar) are installed along the stretch of Wakefield Road between Bracken Hill and the roundabout junction with Barnsley Road.
