Many Ukrainian students, due to the Full-Scale Russian Invasion of Ukraine in 2022, have sought refuge in Canada with hopes of continuing their education and building brighter futures. Unfortunately, the exorbitant international tuition fees charged by Canadian universities pose a major barrier, preventing numerous talented and determined students from accessing quality education.

The Canadian Sunflower Foundation (CDN-Sunflower.ca) stands with these students, recognizing that domestic tuition rates must be extended to them as a step toward offering both immediate relief and hope for their future. Domestic tuition is significantly lower and would enable more Ukrainian students to pursue their dreams and contribute positively to Canadian society.

According to Statistics Canada, international students pay approximately three times more than domestic students, a difference that is simply unaffordable for many Ukrainians deeply affected by war. Removing this financial barrier is not only an act of compassion but a necessary adaptation to a global crisis, acknowledging the severe circumstances these students face.

We call upon Canadian higher education institutions and the government to reassess their policies and make a crucial exception for Ukrainian refugees, recognizing the importance of education in rebuilding their lives during these difficult times.
