Road Safety Improvements for Staveley Street - Waimari Ward

Road Safety Improvements for Staveley Street - Waimari Ward
The issue
As a resident of Staveley Street, it deeply concerns me to see constant speeding, burnouts, and general disregard for the safety of the community, particularly near Staveley Reserve and the Kidsfirst Kindergarten -- this is also an issue on surrounding streets. We have seen collisions with the reserve fence, metres from playground and playing field, near misses with children and parents heading to and from the kindergarten, and sleepless nights due to burnouts.
After communicating with a number of residents, I found that there was equal concern and a desire for change.
This is a petition to demonstrate the level of concern felt by residents and a call to action for the Waimāero/Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board, Councillor Sam MacDonald, and the Christchurch City Council to put residents safety at the top their priority list and look at potential safety improvements in the area.
Resident suggestions include:
- A pedestrian crossing across Staveley Street by the Kidsfirst Kindergarten. Traffic islands could be an addition also.
- Road speed limit signs.
- Speed humps, which are suitable for buses to use. The speed at which the 130 travels at has also been a voiced concern. We do not wish to remove this route as it provides fantastic connectivity for residents.
Please sign if the petition if you also have concerns and would like to see change. It will be sent in conjunction with a letter describing the current situation. This will be emailed to local councillors, community board members, and roading management. I also plan on raising it at the next Waimāero/Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board meeting.
