WA State: change the fee structure for recreational trailer registration.

The Issue

Do you, or someone you know, own a Utility trailer, Boat trailer, or Recreational trailer?

The fee structure for recreational trailers in Washington State is due for an overhaul. Many people are already paying a increased registration fee for their vehicles due to local and regional benefit districts.  But, unlike vehicles, recreational trailers are used much less, as little as once per year.

Why not just pay for a trip permit?  Because, the fee for a trip permit is disproportionately high as compared to the yearly fee.  And, sometimes people plan to use their trailer multiple times per year, but are unable to do so because of work conflicts or other financial burdens that arise.

Washington state is home to many recreational opportunities, making it a great place to supplement kids' indoor education with some outdoor experiences. Camping and fishing can be an excellent educational tool for teaching environmental issues and proper etiquette to children.  Loading a utility trailer with lumber for a play structure or building project, or a run to the dump can also be educational!  But, it's too expensive with the current rate schedule and fees. Often times, one trailer is used in conjunction with another item that is also assessed a yearly registration fee like boats and motorcycles.

For example, a trailer used to haul a kayak, rowboat, camping gear or mountain bikes will cost $35.75 and is a total of 7 separate taxes/fees. If you have more than one trailer, double this amount. It is time to simplify and reduce the costs associated with registering non-commercial trailers in Washington State.

We can start with the following changes:

1. Exempt non-commercial trailers from benefit district taxes, such as Sound Transit.

2. Reduce trip permit costs. For example, one day trip permit for a trailer should cost a reasonable amount of $2 ($5 for seven days) and be available online with no additional fees.

3. Create a reasonable, tiered, weight based registration fee.  For example: 0-2000 pounds gross weight - $10, 2001-5000 pound $15, 5000-10,000 pounds $20.  No additional fees other than the license service fee of $5.  Exempt from licensing service fee when registering with a motor vehicle, second trailer, or vessel.

Sign now, and tell our lawmakers the current licensing taxes and fees are unnecessarily complicated and too expensive for non-commercial trailers!
