The Issue

As a concerned citizen of the United Kingdom, I have witnessed the growing challenges our nation faces concerning immigration and border control. Our ability to swiftly and effectively manage these issues is being hindered by the obligations imposed on us by the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). It is time we have a serious conversation about the relevance and applicability of this agreement to our modern-day needs.

The ECHR, while well-intentioned in its original framework, has proven to be an obstacle in addressing the urgent issue of unauthorized migration. Without the freedom to implement our own strict border policies, we cannot ensure the safety, security, and sovereignty that the UK promises to its citizens. Our hands are tied in sending back individuals who cross into our country without permission. This lack of control is affecting public confidence and straining our public services.

In recent years, the UK has experienced significant increases in migration numbers, putting immense pressure on housing, healthcare, and education systems. According to recent data, the number of people entering the UK illegally has surged, placing an unsustainable burden on our local communities. Revoking our commitments to the ECHR would allow us to craft (and enforce) policies that are in line not just with international laws, but also responsive to our national realities.

We propose that the UK government initiate a public referendum on whether we should continue to be bound by the ECHR. We believe that achieving 100,000 signatures will push our elected representatives to discuss this in Parliament. However, our ambition is to rally millions, showing the overwhelming public desire for change.

Let us exercise our democratic rights and take collective action to shape the future of our country. By addressing this issue head-on, we can reclaim control over our borders and focus on crafting a legal system that is both just and effective.
