Vote of no confidence in John Rankin Schools Executive Headteacher and Chair of Governors

Vote of no confidence in John Rankin Schools Executive Headteacher and Chair of Governors

The Issue

Please sign this petition if you, like many other parents and carers of children who attend John Rankin Schools, have lost confidence in the Headteacher and the Chair Of Governors to carry out the changes required following an Ofsted score of 'Inadequate' for 'quality of education' and for 'leadership and management'. We demand that the remaining governing body and that West Berkshire Council take immediate action to remove both from post.

We would like to clarify this in no way relates to the teachers, teaching assistants, and other staff at John Rankin. We instead acknowledge their hard work and dedication to our children, and at the same time feel they are being let down by these same issues.

In their report Ofsted deemed John Rankin Juniors as 'Inadequate' (the lowest score possible) for both the 'quality of education' and for 'leadership and management'. Previously in 2019 these were rated highly when Ofsted deemed John Rankin Juniors a 'Good' school (the second highest score).

Although we have been told that plans are being put in place to address these issues, many people lack confidence in the plans because:

  • The very people charged with making these changes are the people that brought about these changes in the first place
  • People have been feeding back their concerns for over two years and it's taken this report from Ofsted to start any sort of improvement - parents and carers are tired of not being listened to, and therefore how are we supposed to have confidence that they do things differently now with the urgency required?
  • The Ofsted report clearly states that "Over time, the school has not taken the necessary actions to improve pupils’ learning." and therefore why would they do things differently now?
  • The Ofsted report details "The governing body has not maintained a robust oversight of the quality of education that pupils receive." therefore how can they be trusted to ensure things are turned around?
  • People are worried about the past, current, and future turnover of experienced teachers and teaching assistants (and the wellbeing of current staff) due to the leadership within John Rankin Schools. We want change for their sake, and are concerned about the high level of attrition as it's a sign something is very wrong. We want the teaching staff to have the support they deserve.
  • There is concern around the transparency of the improvement plans, how improvements are being measured, and when we are likely see/ feel these improvements

Ofsted's opening statement reads "Pupils at this school do not receive an acceptable standard of education." We deserve better for our children attending this school who have been let down badly, and have no confidence in the Headteacher or the Chair of Governors to carry out the changes required to get the school back to where it was only a short time ago.
