The Issue

At a time when leadership is often disconnected from the realities on the ground, South Africa has been given something rare: a public representative who understands the wildlife and agricultural sectors not from theory but from lived experience.

Willie Aucamp has spent years actively involved in the wildlife sector. He understands the pressures wildlife farmers face, the regulatory complexities, the conservation responsibilities, and the economic realities that shape our industry.

It is precisely this experience that now makes him the subject of criticism.

Some have suggested that his background in wildlife constitutes a conflict of interest in his new position. We strongly disagree.

Experience in a sector should not disqualify a leader - it should qualify them. Should a Minister of Defence not have served in the army?

If we remove knowledgeable, experienced individuals from leadership roles simply because they understand the industries they serve, we risk replacing practical insight with detached bureaucracy. Wildlife farming, conservation, and sustainable land management are highly specialized fields. They require representation by people who know the landscape and ecology, as well as the economic and social aspects.

Minister Aucamp’s background equips him to understand conservation challenges firsthand, represent rural landowners and wildlife farmers responsibly, balance environmental protection with economic sustainability, and ensure that policies are grounded in reality rather than ideology.

This is not about protecting an individual.
It is about protecting the principle that real-world experience matters in governance.

South Africa’s wildlife sector is a cornerstone of rural economies, conservation funding, biodiversity management, and more. Those who work in it deserve representation by someone who understands their daily realities.

We call for fairness, due process, and an objective assessment free from political pressure or sensationalism.

By signing this petition, you are affirming your support of Minister Aucamp.

Experience should not be punished
Transparency and proper governance processes must prevail
The wildlife community deserves authentic representation
Let us stand together — not in division, but in defence of fairness, expertise, and responsible leadership.

Add your signature today to show your support for Minister Willie Aucamp and for principled governance in South Africa’s wildlife sector.
