Thank you for all of your tremendous efforts to both lobby Denver Mayor Michael Hancock and the Denver City Council members.
Last night, the Denver City Council failed to override Mayor Hancock's veto. The Denver vaping flavor ban bill is defeated. The Council needed nine votes to override the Mayor's veto. The Council could only muster eight votes.
We all need to take time to celebrate for winning this hard-fought, one-year-long battle in Denver. During the last year, we learned a lot about messaging, organizing, and battling Michael Bloomberg-funded organizations like Campaign for Tobacco Kids. Believe me - our opponents will return in 2022 and we need to be ready. But for now, let's enjoy this hard-won victory!
In January, Ted Trimpa, Amanda Wheeler, and I will follow up with all of you to plot our next strategy for crafting better legislation in Denver with a regulatory framework approach.
Also, we are already talking to Colorado State Representative Kyle Mullica (Democrat from Adams County) who is considering running a statewide, flavor ban bill in the 2022 Colorado State Legislature. The defeat in Denver will provide us momentum to ensure that he includes an Age Restricted Amendment in any proposed legislation. There is no statewide flavor ban legislation yet. We are still talking to Representative Mullica. The Colorado General Assembly convenes from January 12 - May 12, 2022.
Today let's celebrate.
