The Issue

I drive past a rock quarry every day, and the dust it generates is so thick that visibility is significantly reduced, making driving hazardous. My car is always coated in grime, as though it's been on a gravel road. If the Olathe City Council approves the extension of a rock quarry near our homes, these daily nuisances will become the norm for countless families in our community, bringing with it much bigger issues than just dirty cars.

This is not only a matter of inconvenience but one of health and safety. The dust that obscures our roads and settles on our belongings is also a significant health hazard. Studies have shown that long-term exposure to silica dust often found in quarry operations can lead to respiratory diseases such as silicosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The World Health Organization has long cited air pollution as a leading cause of illness, asserting that there is no level of exposure that is entirely without risk.

Moreover, the expansion of this quarry would include underground mining activities, posing serious risks to the integrity of our homes. Many local houses are at risk of developing structural issues, such as cracks in their foundations. These potential damages can lead to costly repairs and a decrease in property values, affecting the financial security of hundreds of Olathe families.

We have to ask ourselves: is the expansion really worth the risks? The impact will not only be felt by us, the residents living within immediate proximity, but also by the broader community. Increased industrial activity often leads to more traffic, noise, and, most significantly, pollution. Once a quarry is expanded, reversing the damage is all but impossible.

Olathe's charm and appeal rest on its natural beauty and the peace of its residential neighborhoods. Allowing the expansion of the quarry undermines these qualities and contradicts our vision of a safe and healthy environment for our children to grow up in.

Let your voice be heard. Tell the Olathe City Council that our health, safety, and property come first. We need to protect the integrity of our community for current and future generations.

Please, sign this petition to urge the Olathe City Council to vote NO on the extension of the quarry near our homes.

“Thanks very much for including me on the petition distribution list. I have read, acknowledge, and appreciate the various concerns. I have also received in excess of 30 emails directly from residents over the past few weeks. Many thanks to all for the significant volume of meaningful information. As you all know, last Tuesday, October 6th the City Council voted to approve the annexation, rezoning, and expansion of the JCA quarry. Much research and deliberation led to this decision. All input was fully considered. And I want to assure everyone that neither the large corporation behind JCA, nor any potential increase in City revenue had any impact on this decision. In addition to the significant improvements agreed to by JCA, the Council enacted a variety of new control measures all aimed at mitigating the impact in this part of Olathe. A baseline is being set and the actual reduction in dust will be closely monitored. We have an expectation of measurably improved air quality. And there’s intent to establish these controls for all active quarry operations in Olathe as soon as possible. Sincerely, Dean Vakas Mayor Pro Tem City Councilor, Ward 2 [Note: The Change.org Civic Engagement Team reaches out to decision makers to let them know about petitions in their community and to help facilitate engagement with supporters. The above was an email response we received regarding this petition.]”
