VOTE NO on May 6th to TOXIC TURF @ Allen's Meadow

The Issue

An ill-advised proposal in our town of Wilton to convert one or more existing grass playing fields at Allen's Meadow to ARTIFICIAL TURF is a hazard to our public health, safety, and environment including our drinking water.  On top of that, it'll cost you, the taxpayer, at least $2 Million in Board of Selectmen proposed bonding. You can stop this proposal but only if you VOTE NO to TOXIC TURF on May 6th at the Clune Center (Note- signing this petition does not take the place of your actual vote on 5/6!).

Reasons to Vote NO to TOXIC TURF:

  • Science has shown that turf fields contain forever chemicals known as PFAS that can be linked to cancer, liver damage, hormone disruption, and reproductive disorders to name a few.
  • A recent EPA advisory states there are no safe levels of PFAS in drinking water; states and localities are spending hundreds of millions of dollars on cleaning up PFAS pollution in their communities in order to provide safe drinking water for their residents.  Who will foot that bill in Wilton?
  • The proposed turf fields are situated on top of an aquifer that appears in the State Drinking Water Supply Plan and Aquarion Water’s supply plans; Aquarion expressed concern about the chances of turf fields contaminating the aquifer and people’s nearby wells- they do not think artificial turf should be laid on or near drinking water sources.
  • The town's proposed mill rate is increasing by nearly 6%!  Why are we spending an unnecessary $2 million+ to install a toxic turf field with only an 8-10 year lifespan, not to mention the ongoing maintenance costs?
  • Injuries: there’s a reason the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team and the NFL Players Association oppose artificial turf. A 2021 paper published in Current Orthopaedic Practice concluded that “Athletes were 58% more likely to sustain an injury on artificial turf."
  • Disposal: The lifespan of an artificial turf field is around eight-to-10 years at best after which it goes to a landfill forever as it does not biodegrade. There are no artificial turf recycling facilities in the US.
  • Excessive heat: surface temperatures on turf fields increase dramatically in hot weather. Heat illness is the #1 cause of death and disability in high school athletes.
  • Turf fields also play an adverse role in climate change, heating the air and emitting greenhouse gases throughout their lifespans, while natural grass absorbs carbon dioxide and releases oxygen.

Please join a growing number of Wiltonians in opposing the proposed turf fields at Allen's Meadow by signing this petition AND more importantly voting NO to TURF on May 6th at the Clune Center. YOU can make a difference and stop this health, environmental, and financial disaster, but you must VOTE.
