The Issue

I stood before the Fresno City Council and said this plainly: the Shield Act resolution is the wrong move for our city. My statewide nonprofit represents all 1,389 people in Fresno who are currently required to register, and I urged the council not to direct the city attorney to draft an ordinance that would further restrict where they can live. We have already seen what happens when local government tries to pass laws like this, and we are prepared to challenge it if Fresno moves forward.

This is bigger than one meeting or one headline. When people are pushed out of lawful housing, they do not disappear. They become harder to monitor, more unstable, and more likely to end up homeless, which makes our communities less safe, not more. Fresno families deserve policies rooted in reality, not fear, and taxpayers should not be forced to bankroll a legal fight that is likely to fail.

I am calling on the Fresno City Council to vote no on the Shield Act resolution and stop this ordinance before it starts. Do not send the city attorney down the road of drafting a housing restriction that invites litigation, wastes public money, and undermines public safety. Fresno should focus on lawful, effective solutions that support housing stability and accountability instead of repeating failed approaches.

If you believe public safety and constitutional rights can and must coexist, please sign this petition. Tell the Fresno City Council to reject the Shield Act housing ban and choose policy that protects the whole community. We cannot afford bad law, wasted taxpayer money, and more unmonitored homelessness.
