The Issue

We, the undersigned petitioners and registered voters of the Cayman Islands, direct the Cayman Islands Government to immediately suspend permission for any removal of any sea bed/beach rock on Seven Mile Beach, and to instead place on the ballot of the May, 2017 General Elections the people-initiated referendum question as to whether those registered as electors in the Cayman Islands give their consent for the Dart establishment to remove any sea bed/beach rock in front of their hotel on Seven Mile Beach.

By the Cayman Islands Constitution Order 2009, (hereinafter referred to as the “Constitution”), this People-initiated Petition shall have the effect and purpose of complying with the provisions of Section 70 People-initiated referendums of the said Constitution, with the express intention of presenting it to the Cabinet of the Cayman Islands Government to hold a referendum on the matters set out above.

According to Section 18 Protection of the Environment in the Constitution, it states that “(1) Government shall, in all its decision, have due regard to the need to foster and protect an environment that is not harmful to the health or well-being of present and future generations, while promoting justifiable economic and social development. (2) To this end government should adopt reasonable legislative and other measures to protect the heritage and wildlife and the land and sea biodiversity of the Cayman Islands that-(a) limit pollution and ecological degradation; (b) promote conservation and biodiversity; and (c) secure ecologically sustainable development and use of natural resources.”

By their signatures herein, each petitioner hereby understands, acknowledges and agrees that this People-initiated Petition shall be used and presented for such purpose and hereby gives their full consent to such use and presentation.
