The Issue

Living in Somerset County has always been a privilege due to its natural beauty, distinct small-town charm, and historic sites. However, the proposed construction of  data centers threatens to disrupt our serene environment, potentially giving way to irreparable environmental damage, increased traffic congestion, and altered landscapes that have been preserved by generations. Data centers have  also create sound and water pollution and may cause infertility, in both cows, wildlife and people

Somerset County, known for its lush green fields and pristine air quality, stands as a pristine haven for thousands of residents, including myself, who cherish the tranquility and sense of community that has been a hallmark of our county for decades. I have personally witnessed the incredible sunrise dance on the green pastures as I start my day, a lost treasure if industrial eyesores begin to overshadow our landscapes.

Proponents of the project argue the economic benefits, citing job creation as a primary motivation. However, data centers are known to employ far fewer people than other possible land uses while consuming enormous amounts of energy and water. According to a study by the Natural Resources Defense Council, a single data center can consume electricity comparable to 50,000 homes in one year.

Further exacerbating the situation, these facilities often generate substantial noise pollution and heat, affecting both wildlife and residential life. Our community should not have to sacrifice its environment and quality of life for minimal economic gains that could be achieved through more sustainable ventures.

It's crucial for everyone in Somerset County to stand together and demand our voices be heard. We propose the county conducts a community-wide referendum to determine whether residents support or oppose these data center constructions. This democratic approach would ensure that all potential impacts – economic, environmental, and social – are carefully considered, and the will of the people respected.

Sign this petition to urge Somerset County officials to hold a public poll and evaluate the true consensus of our community. Let's protect the essence of what makes our county unique for future generations. Together, we must advocate for thoughtful urban planning that prioritizes sustainable growth and the well-being of all residents.
