against use of the controversial method of fracking (hydraulic fracturing). Croatia, as the EU member -- in 2014 within the working group which in the European Commission deals with the issue of massive hydraulic fracturing of slate and sandstone –along with most EU countries, took a clear position not to permit nor plan to permit the mentioned method of fracturing. However, it is known that this extremely damaging method has been applied in the area of Međimurje for years, and now it will be applied in the following new the areas of research: DR-02, DR-03, DR-04, SA-08, SA-09, SA-10, SA-06, SA-07, SA-11, SA-12, SZH-01, SZH-05, DI - 13, DI - 14, DI - 15, DI - 16. Namely, there is no difference at all between fracking and mass hydraulic fracturing. These are two names for the same process of gas or oil extraction from slate or sandstone by injecting fluid – a combination of water, chemicals and sand into borehole in a certain layer in the subterranean rock under great pressure to achieve cracking of rocks into layers and to provoke influx of natural gas or oil trapped therein. This technology is extremely damaging for subterraneanwaters and in case of bad management of waste waters, also for surface waters. Main risks connected with this technology can be predicted and the damage to the environment manifests in the following: chemical substances used are cancerogenic, radioactive and mutagenic, they permanently pollute the underground, especially subterranean waters; further it manifests in evaporation of methane which is often found in wellsprings in the vicinity of location where the drilling is done. For these reasons we ask the competent authorities to carry out strategic assessment of influence, risk assessment for specific locations and transparent informing of the public as a minimum measure, prior to taking a decision to carry out such activities. Further, based on results of these activities the authorities shouldpass legislation on said technology which is currently missing, and introduce a moratorium on such activities pending mentioned steps. Let’s be progressive and not fossil (backward) and let’s ban the use of fracking as Germany, France, Scotland, Ireland, Bulgaria and other countries have donewhich want to preserve quality of their water and soil and with that also the health of their population. http://spectrumgeo.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=030d9f2d4e0e426288ced2fb965c232c&extent=1700280.6778%2C5565865.6437%2C2166546.5503%2C5880480.4521%2C102100&fbclid=IwAR3NmE3X6at9XQHhtgtR8nJNYyUzk9TzUDH8t8SHz2Y9rCEQrXi1np01Nws
