In most recent news the governor of Virginia has announced for the statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee to be removed. I want my own Blacksburg community to follow the lead of Virginia and use this momentum to start making some changes. Most people don't know that Lee Hall was named after Claudius Lee, a Virginia Tech Alum. Students at Virginia Tech came across a page in the 1896 Bugle listing Lee as a leader in the campus chapter of the KKK. For many black and brown students living in Lee hall, it is a very uncomfortable experience. There have been several petitions throughout the years to rename Lee Hall but no change has been made. In 2003, Virginia Tech renamed New Residence Hall West ‘Peddrew-Yates Hall’ to recognize the first African Americans to be admitted to and graduate from the university. Black excellence and success cannot be fully appreciated and recognized at Virginia Tech as long as an adjacent building, Lee Hall, is named after and dedicated to a racist. In light of our current movement to end racial injustice in America, I am asking my fellow Hokies and everyone to sign this petition to rename Lee hall to someone more deserving. Virginia Tech's motto is Ut Prosim "That I May serve". Hokies, it is time to serve. LET’S GO HOKIES.
