Rename “Jefferson Davis Highway” in Virginia

Rename “Jefferson Davis Highway” in Virginia

The Issue

In response to all of the confederate statues that are being dismantled, we ask to rename Jefferson Davis Highways (U.S Route 1) in Virginia. This highway runs from the Potomac River through Virginia to the North Carolina border. Jefferson Davis, was the former President of the Confederate States of America from 1861 to 1865. This highway is honoring the name of a man who raged war on the United States and condoned slavery. It is time we take the initiative to stop honoring white supremacy in our state and a man who divided the country into two all for the support of slavery. It is an insult to our residents.

Jefferson Davis was apart of our history but he is not a man who should be praised. His actions haunt millions of Americans throughout the United States of America and divided the nation in half. The division he created still remains today. We demand the Virginia lawmakers and leaders to erase his name from U.S Route 1. Alexandria and Arlington County have recently taken the initiative to rename the highway to "Richmond Highway". We seek to do the same and rename all over the state. We ask for you to take the next step to abolish confederacy in our state and insure our citizens feel comfortable in our state.
