Virginia has historically been the home of racism and white supremacy in America. To this day, white supremacists are able to cover their homes, cars, and clothes with a symbol of hatred, hiding behind claims of “culture” and “history”. Freedom of speech is a real thing that should be given to anyone globally, but when this freedom is abused to spread hatred, this freedom should be controlled. The Confederate flag is a constant reminder of the white supremacy that birthed the unequal living experiences of African Americans still going on today. Banning the display of this flag in Virginia will take away this reminder and be a step forward in the fight for racial equality in America.
