We are writing to express our support for clean water, local seafood, and the local watermen and women in Virginia Beach’s Lynnhaven River; and we urge you to support us in opposing the efforts of a handful of Virginia Beach residents determined to undermine the oyster aquaculture of the Lynnhaven.

This objection includes efforts to make the process more burdensome through increased fees or bureaucratic processes designed to make oyster farming more complicated, difficult and onerous on the family farmers who are trying to make a living from publicly owned waters.

Our Commonwealth is a national leader in aquaculture in no small measure because we have chosen to protect our natural waterways and to nurture the communities practicing that culture.

The Virginia Marine Resource Commission itself “strongly encourages gardening and farming of oysters and clams.” The citizens of the Commonwealth own the waterways, and all of us want them clean enough to support both our dietary and recreational interests.

Our State and our Nation both struggle with ways to support local economies and to produce quality food.

Aquaculture contributes greatly to the local economy and environment by producing local seafood, providing local jobs, and bringing valuable tourist dollars to Virginia Beach and Virginia. As importantly, it also helps conserve and restore water quality in the Lynnhaven which directly influences the Chesapeake Bay.

Protecting the waterways and the oyster aquaculture also makes good economic sense for Virginia Beach and Virginia.

The loss of oystering aquaculture endangers the millions of dollars invested in cleaning our waters, as well as the property values and tourist dollars dependent on those clean waters.

Restoration, Conservation & Aquaculture are the 3 pillars to clean waterways, and clean waterways are essential to the economic, social and cultural life that makes Virginia Beach and Virginia so unique & desirable.

Thank you for your service and for hearing our concerns.
