Hello, everyone! I hope that you all had a great weekend! Today marks the beginning of a week long effort to raise awareness for Kelly. Last Friday, I posted her remarks in an effort to let people catch a glimpse of her heart. She is truly an incredible woman that deserves a second chance at having a life. I have told you how she and I met on her Facebook page and if there isn't providence in that, then there is providence in nothing. That is why I believe that she has a purpose beyond those walls. If a person has truly changed and matured, if they have re-forged their heart, if they have transcended their past and learned from their mistakes, then what purpose does it serve to keep them as a prisoner? For more than twenty-one years, Kelly has been paying for her wrongs. If justice be our cause, then our cause is satisfied. But if our true aim be vengeance, then it is best that we admit that to ourselves and change our arguments. There are those who have done far worse than she, and they are eligible for parole while she isn't. Kelly's hand never held the blade that cut a young life short. She wasn't even present at the struggle where those wounds were inflicted. She made it known that she did not wish the victim to be seriously hurt, much less killed. Yet none of this was taken into consideration when they sentenced her to spend the rest of her life in prison for what she did at the ripe, old age of 17. We expect children to make mistakes and to grow and change, we expect our prisons to reform those we send to them, and we expect ourselves to be merciful and forgiving. But Kelly Dara proves that we don't always hold to those expectations. And so we sweep people like her under the rug and hope that nobody notices. Well, I noticed. And so did 551 others as of this morning. This week, we remember a good and decent woman who has changed her life. This week, we remind others that she still exists and is important. This week, we ask the government to take another look at the excessively harsh sentence that it handed out to a child and to make it right. This week, we stand as one and tell people about Kelly, post her fliers, and ask the Governor of Virginia to be merciful and to forgive Kelly her past and grant her a chance for a new future. May God make it so. Bill Kelly's flier is here (registration required): http://freekelly.freeforums.net/thread/2/kellys-flyer Kelly's petition is here: goo.gl/kc2a4f
