Mission Statement: This petition is to urge our representatives to start the process at once to replace the aging Robert O. Norris Bridge. The bridge is one of the biggest deterrents to The Northern Neck of Virginia and the area South that takes in Middlesex, Mathews & Gloucester Counties.
The bridge was built in the late 50’s and replaced a Ferry system. Over time the deck has deteriorated but the greatest fear is the width of the bridge which is far too narrow for cars and trucks that pass over it each day.
The people of this area and any visitors should not have to avoid this structure or even coming to the area because of their fear of it. Many have stories they can tell about their fear and things that have happened over the years.
It’s only a matter of time before there is a loss of life or something catastrophic that will get peoples’ attention to proc eed NOW with replacement.
While Dominion Power is considering the building of huge towers costing multi-millions of dollars, it would behoove the State of Virginia to join with Dominion in erecting a structure where the same money can go into the building of a new bridge and allow them to run the power cables under the deck at the same time. It will create a win/win situation.
Please sign this petition if you would like it to be presented to the right people to get moving on this project. Please understand just like with the Yorktown Bridge and others, there may be the need for a small Toll in one direction to make this happen.
