Petition for a Crosswalk Signal at Crosspointe Drive and Silverbrook Road
The Issue
The intersection of Crosspointe Drive and Silverbrook Road has proved to be dangerous time and time again. It is a danger to pedestrians and drivers alike, and multiple accidents have occurred here. The risk-factor of crossing this intersection can be significantly lowered with a simple solution -- a pedestrian crosswalk signal.
After the first fatal accident, streetlights and a crosswalk were installed, but it's not enough. The crosswalk has no traffic light attached to it -- it's simply a place designated for people to walk. It's only marginally safer than crossing any other part of the intersection. We intend to have a pedestrian crosswalk signal installed. A pedestrian crosswalk signal is a button that is pushed by pedestrians, and it triggers a traffic light to turn red, causing cars to stop, and allowing pedestrians to safely cross.
This solution may sound like a traffic light, but a pedestrian crosswalk signal is not the same as a traffic light. For one thing, a traffic light changes from green to yellow to red of its own accord, usually on a timer. A pedestrian crosswalk signal only changes from green to red when a pedestrian is actively attempting to cross the intersection. This is a better solution than a traffic light, as it's cheaper, and will have a lesser impact on traffic conditions.
This is an issue that is important to me, as well as my community because I was recently in an accident at this intersection. There were kids in the car in the accident I was in, and I feel that the safety of our community's children is an issue too big to ignore. Installing a pedestrian crosswalk signal would make parents feel better about allowing their kids to walk to our neighborhood pool, and it would even allow kids to walk safely to school, saving money on buses.
A pedestrian crosswalk signal is needed in our community. Please do the right thing, and help us make a change for the better.
