Free access through Stockport Station underpass

The Issue

This underpass provides a valuable link between Edgeley and Stockport and has always been available to the public to use freely. Restricting access will cause considerable inconvenience to Stockport residents. If you agree that free access should be maintained then please sign this petition to show Virgin Trains how strongly we feel about this important issue.

“Thanks for letting us know your concerns. We are required by our franchise agreement with the government to install Gate Lines at Stockport. It is about fairness and improved customer security, which along with the with the seven new Welcome Hosts we have recruited, will lead to a much better experience for our customers. Our Welcome Hosts will be there to meet and greet customers and act as ambassadors for Stockport. But it was never our intention to prevent local residents from making their day to day journeys. We’ve listened to this petition and are delighted to say that, working with the Council and Ann Coffey MP, we are putting in place a guest pass scheme to ensure that local people can continue to use the underpass. The way this will work is that Welcome Hosts will hand out a pass at one end of the subway which you can hand back to a host on the other side. The new scheme will start on Tuesday 18 August. So we look forward to seeing you at the station in the coming weeks. Be sure to say hello to our new Welcome Hosts who can’t wait to get started. Richard Stanton ”
