The Issue

In honor of Dr. Shaylor James' 52 years of exemplerary services to the Florida A&M University, City of Tallahassee, and the world of percussion, we are petitioning Florida A&M University for a road designation in his honor. A brief summary of Dr. James follows as provided by Florida A&M University:

Shaylor L. James, Ph.D, Professor of Music, serves as assistant to the Chairman, Assistant Director of Bands, Director of Percussion and the Percussion Ensemble. Dr. James graduated from Florida A&M University with a Bachelor of Science in instrumental music. He later earned his master's of Music in percussion performance and his doctorate from Florida State University. He has done additional study at the University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana).

James is active throughout the southeast as a percussion consultant, clinician, adjudicator and solo artist. He has served as Teaching Fellow at North Carolina Central University (Durham) and at Fayetteville State University (North Carolina). He has also served as percussionist with the Tallahassee Symphony and as principal timpanist with the Albany (GA) Symphony Orchestra. He currently serves as timpanist with the Big Bend Community Orchestra. James has written several compositions for solo percussion, percussion ensemble, and brass choir. He has also co-published Entrance Routines for Marching Bands.

 

James has received the Teacher of the Year, Superior Accomplishment, Distinguished Service and Teacher Incentive Program (TIP) awards. He has been recognized for outstanding service as director of Percussion for the marching and symphonic bands, and as director of the FAMU Percussion Ensemble which has appeared nationally on CBS television, performed for the United Nations General Assembly, and has made numerous appearances at universities and clinics through the southeast. He is a member of the Percussive Arts Society (PAS), National Association of Wind and Percussion Instructors (NACWPI), College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA), Florida Bandmasters Association (FBA), Florida Music Education Association (FMEA), Phi Delta Kappa Education Society, Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Band Fraternity and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America (Advisor). Dr. James’ accomplishments are cited in several biographical listings.
