British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) is an organisation creating national competitions for universities around Britain to compete against each other in almost 50 different sports, yet Cheerleading is not currently one of them.
Cheerleading is not the sport the media has portrayed it to be in the past, but instead involves high skill in gymnastics, dance, jumps and stunting which are mastered with lots of intense practice like the many sports in the competitions BUCS holds. We would like BUCS to recognise Cheerleading as the legitimate sport it is and add Cheerleading to it's list of sports, therefore creating a competition in which Cheerleading teams in Britain can compete, representing their university and displaying their talents.
The BUCS has the ability to allow Cheerleading to be a competitive sport alongside other traditional sports played at university level, and abolish the notion that Cheerleading is something which is only done to "cheer on" other sports teams instead of also being a highly competitive and enjoyable sport in its own right.
With the Olympic Committee granting Cheerleading provisional recognition as an Olympic sport, it's about time a great organisation providing competitions for universities also grants cheerleaders the ability to compete.
Vince Mayne is the CEO of BUCS and has the ability to add Cheerleading to the list of sports the organisation holds competitions for, so we are petitioning for him to make this addition and allow cheerleaders around Britain to represent their university!
