Stop the Spraying of Adult Mosquitos in Downers Grove
The Issue
According to experts, the most effective way to control mosquito populations is during their larval stage, when mosquitoes are concentrated, immobile, and accessible. Spraying adult mosquitos may reduce numbers for a few days, but it does not prohibit more mosquitoes from entering the area plus many of the non-target species that are likely to be impacted by spraying, are mosquito predators. Populations of these mosquito predators do not typically recover as quickly as their prey which can result in an even greater, naturally unchecked surge in the number of mosquitoes.
Clarke Mosquito Control will spray for adult mosquitoes in Downers Grove using Biomist 3+15: "Harmful if swallowed or absorbed through skin. This pesticide is extremely toxic to aquatic organisms, including fish and invertebrates. This product is highly toxic to bees exposed to direct treatment on blooming crops or weeds." Active Ingredients: Permethrin (3-phenoxyphenyl) methyl (+/-) cis, trans-3-(2,2-dichlorethenyl)-2,2-dimethyl cyclopropanecarboxylate, Piperonyl Butoxide Source: http://www.clarke.com/filebin/productpdf/biomist315.pdf
EPA classified permethrin as “Likely to be Carcinogenic to Humans”. Permethrin toxicity data show that the compound is highly toxic to honey bees, as well as other beneficial insects (such as dragonflies and butteflies). Dragonflies, which eat insects as adults, are a great control on the mosquito population. A single dragonfly can eat 30 to hundreds of mosquitoes per day. Source: http://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/14-fun-facts-about-dragonflies-96882693/?no-ist
Cost to the village in previous years was $6,900 per spray.
