STOP Garbage Composting Site at Glyndon Park

The Issue

The Town of Vienna is planning to put a garbage composting site between the little parking lot and tennis court at Glyndon Park. I can't think of a more inappropriate place to put what is essentially rotting food waste / garbage.

1. Glyndon Park is a green park and recreation space for children and adults and not suited for a garbage composting facility.

2. The garbage composting bins would be placed adjacent to a busy tennis court, in a parking lot where many people stop to eat lunch in their car and enjoy the greenery; and located below a blind curve with cars commonly traveling at a high rate of speed.

3. The garbage composting bins will emit unpleasant odors; spillage from resident use will attract rats and flies. The park is already littered with trash in some areas and many garbage cans lack covers. I have little confidence that the DPW or Parks and Recreation will police the area between garbage compost pick ups as promised.

4. This decision was made without prior consultation with residents other than the Town Sustainability Committee.

5. There is nothing sustainable about this method of garbage composting as it releases methane, a greenhouse gas 84 times more powerful than carbon dioxide, the most common greenhouse gas. Instead, the garbage is better suited for disposal in a landfill where methane gas is captured, rather than emitted directly into the atmosphere.

6. We are already dealing with the stench, noise and inconvenience of the Beulah Park mulch pit, we don't need to be burdened with a garbage composting facility as well.

7. If the Town is to do garbage composting at all, the facility should be located at the parking lots of the community center, firehouse parking lot, town hall parking lot or DPW yard and not a green recreational park.

Please sign our petition, and let Vienna’s Town Council know that this is not an acceptable use at Glyndon Park.
