NINA DROZ IS TRANSFERRED TO THE JAIL OF TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA, USA, BUT NOT BEFORE NEW ABUSES ARE COMMITTED AGAINST HER
Statements by the Committee of Friends and Family of Nina Droz Franco
Wednesday, July 25, 2018
---------
On Friday, July 20, 2018, Nina Droz Franco reported that she was in a prison in Oklahoma. She had been moved the previous day, along with seven other inmates of the US Federal Metropolitan Detention Center in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, after a long travel odyssey.
Nina Droz, who had been held in administrative detention in the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Guaynabo since the early hours of May 2, 2017, was finally sentenced on June 12, 2018, before Judge Aida Delgado. At the time of sentencing, Nina had been held in solitary confinement without visiting rights for three months and two months without access to a computer.
At the sentencing hearing, Nina asked permission to make a statement. Nina denounced the abuses committed against her and the terrible conditions in which the confined women live: the lack of medical treatment for diseases such as cancer, HIV, diabetes, hepatitis, skin and breast tumors, and also to the difficulty of obtaining treatment for an ear infection. She also denounced the lack of orthopedic care for the healing of fractures with wrist bands, bandages and ibuprofen. She denounced the officers Antonio Cesany, for harassing the inmates, and the guard Roberto Guzmán who on one occasion was harrassing her through the window for an indeterminate period of time, and who, before the accusation, retaliated against her by sending her to the solitary.
In a shocking story, Nina informed the judge about the abuses committed against the inmates after the passage of Hurricane Maria, where they were left without ventilation. they ordered them to take water from the toilet, they limited their access to drinking water, hygiene products, their documents and the lack of food. Among other practices, she also denounced the elimination of visits to inmates as a preferred control strategy, which causes severe suffering to the inmates and their families. She expressed that visits should be a right and not a privilege.
In another move of abuse, humiliation and violation of human dignity against Droz Franco, the guard Gaby Meléndez, who we had previously denounced for abusive acts against the confined lesbian in MDC, searched Nina’s cell and accused her of some faults for which she was handcuffed by the guards. Simultaneously and in front of the male guards, the nurse surnamed Hikok, appeared and cut the uniform worn by Droz Franco with a knife, stripping her of all her clothes, including her underwear that was also cut, while the guard Roberto Guzman was recording her with a video camera. The rest of her confinement in the Metropolitan Detention Center was spent in the SHU (Solitary Housing Unit) until she was transferred to Oklahoma.
The transfer, like the previous one because of Hurricane Maria, was plagued by unnecessary abuse and abuse. The confined were removed from their cells at dawn on July 19, 2018 and were handcuffed with chains, which prevented them from using the bathroom or eating, they were not provided with enough food and were handcuffed and chained until late hours of the night.
The Committee of Friends and Family of Nina Droz Franco reiterates its support for Nina and her family, and will continue to be a spearhead in the denunciation of the abuses and abuses that have been committed against her because of the political nature of her processing and confinement and against other confined to those whose human rights are also violated.
We recognize, however, the other guards who respected their human rights and those of the other confined and confined.
Society must evaluate how federal jailers treat their inmates, if their rights are guaranteed and how, if at all, they establish strategies that will lead to their rehabilitation.
