(English translation by Déborah B. Santana) If the consequences of the repression unleashed by the state this May 1 (2018) against demonstrators of one of the marches against the Fiscal Control Board (JCF) and the government of Puerto Rico, have not all been seen, we must remember that is still pending the reading of sentence against the young Nina Droz, arrested in the protest for the same reasons, on May 1, 2017, and who is the only one that the US government in Puerto Rico assumed jurisdiction out of 30 arrested by the Police of Puerto Rico. This year, 19 young people were arrested. The reading of sentence against Droz is scheduled for Thursday, May 31 at 2:00 in the afternoon before Judge Aida Delgado. Attorney Mariana Nogales, one of the spokespersons of the Committee of Friends and Family (CAFND), announced that prison authorities have again banned visits to Droz as an alleged disciplinary measure. The last time she visited Droz was between the days of April 25-28. (Note: Nogales is not the attorney for Droz. Droz’ attorneys are under a gag rule prohibiting them from discussing the case publicly.) Following the passage of the hurricane in September 2017 the young woman was transferred to a prison in the United States and then returned in February 2018. During those months she could receive visitors, even when these were not exempt from delays, and harassment by the authorities of the prison (the so-called Federal Detention Center in Puerto Rico), against visitors, particularly against her mother, Aurea Franco Ortiz. Ms. Nogales told CLARIDAD that before sentencing there are still pending appeals regarding disciplinary sanctions. She denounced that the procedure against Droz regarding the visits has been extremely strict, especially with her mother, and noted that the danger of these sanctions is that they can influence the mood of the judge. Even though the defense has argued for a 24-month sentence, for its part the prosecution is requesting a sentence of 37 months; however, sentencing guidelines can reach five years. Regarding any of these two scenarios, Nogales defended that "she had served enough time, it's over, they should release her". Droz Franco has been in prison (on administrative detention) since May 1, 2017. "It is important that people know that there is a group of people who are still working and supporting Nina." The lawyer Nogales agreed that until now, compared to the events of 2017, the federal authorities have not assumed jurisdiction over any of those arrested this first of May (2018). She called attention to the fact that the federal magistrate Bruce McGiverin, ordered on May 2 the seizure of the cell phone of the young activist Scott Barbés. This was the same magistrate who oversaw the plea bargain of Droz Franco. The activist did not hesitate to denounce that the authorities "are fishing for someone to charge". She also complained that the actions of the police against the demonstrators was a repeat of last year, in terms of how the police acted improperly against protesters in handling situations and tear gas.
