I first saw Carmen Carrera as a contestant on RuPaul's Drag Race and have been a huge fan of hers, and the show, ever since. She famously became the first contestant to come out as a transgender woman and transition after the show. Since then she's been a successful model doing ads for Orbitz, features in W Magazine, and has taken the NY and LA runways by storm! She’s an inspiration to me and the millions of people who identify as LGBT.
That's why I'm calling on Victoria’s Secret to ask Carmen be their first transgender model.
Victoria's Secret is well-known for launching the careers of supermodels and being an iconic American brand. Victoria's Secret Angels push the barriers whether it’s on the runway or in photo shoots -- and that's just what Carmen does! She's a force to be reckoned with and deserves to walk the same runway as legends like Gisele and Heidi Klum.
By asking Carmen to be a model, Victoria's Secret would show the entire community that they embrace trans patrons. There are so many prejudices toward the trans community, even within the LGBT community, and many trans individuals are not seen as real people. To see a transgender model walk would show that trans women are to be taken seriously and that Angels are selected because of their character and talent. As a brand, Victoria's Secret should feel comfortable marketing towards ALL types of women.
Victoria's Secret has responded to petitions in the past and, with enough support, I think they might respond again! Join me in asking Victoria's Secret to be a leader and let Carmen Carrera be their first transgender Angel and walk the runway of legendary supermodels.
