We urge the new Queensland Government, under Premier David Crisafulli’s leadership, to construct a new 60,000+ seat stadium at Victoria Park as a future-proof home for AFL and cricket in Queensland. This vision would ensure a lasting legacy well beyond the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
AFL and cricket have outgrown the Gabba, and Queensland deserves a bold new stadium plan to serve these two major sports.
In February 2023, the Queensland government announced a $2.7 billion redevelopment of the Gabba to host AFL, cricket, and Olympic ceremonies and athletics. Following the 2023 leadership change, Premier Stephen Miles introduced a 60-day review of Olympic stadium options, which was delivered in March 2024.
The review recommended building a new stadium on 10% of Victoria Park’s 65 hectares, repurposing the Gabba site into parkland after the Victoria Park stadium opened.
As the author of the “Save East Brisbane State School” petition in June 2022, I understand the Gabba’s spatial limitations. The thought of a revitalised Gabba parkland, a historic school saved for future generations, and a new stadium at Victoria Park was inspiring.
However, Premier Miles opted to hold Olympic athletics at QSAC Stadium, with ceremonies at Suncorp, overlooking the independent panel’s recommendations.
The new Queensland Government, elected in October, led by Premier David Crisafulli, is about to appoint a 100-day infrastructure review committee to determine the best Olympic stadium solution.
This moment calls for a strategic investment and in a facility that Queenslanders can enjoy long after 2032. Victoria Park is the ideal choice, requiring just a small portion of the site while preserving green space for public use.
Let’s rise above the political back-and-forth and commit to a stadium that will serve Queensland for generations.
