IMMEDIATELY COMMENCE CONSTRUCTION ON ANOTHER BRIDGE TO CROSS THE YARRA RIVER AT REYNOLDS ROAD

The issue

The petitioners regard the congestion of roads to the Warrandyte Bridge from the feeder roads of Ringwood/Warrandyte Road Warrandyte, Yarra Street Warrandyte, Kangaroo Ground Road and Research/Warrandyte roads, to be totally untenable on a day to day basis. Users, local and otherwise, travelling to and from Eastern Freeway/Eastlink, tradesmen making their way to and from the Eastern suburbs via the Warrandyte bridge, airport traffic and growth suburb commuters from places like Doreen are totally clogging the roads at certain times of the day. There are queues of 2km just to get to the bridge and this can take up to 30 minutes. In the case of a bush fire there are no words to describe the hopeless inadequacy of “The Bridge” or the roads leading to it from the North of Warrandyte. This is a “shared” problem. Not all people using the bridge are local, nor should they have to be “local” (as suggested by some) to use the local roads or the bridge. Therefore there must be a joint effort on all our parts to remedy the problem. Some may even be tourists from as far away as Timbuktu, etc, etc. or your Aunt Mable from Mornington. Here is a quotation from Warrandyte Community Association correspondence:-“Issues raised in 2005 were:1. Traffic volume: Too much traffic, lack of alternate routes, road maintenance and choke points.2. Emergency Access: Fire season risk and potential for gridlock3. Safety: Lack of crossings, pedestrian safety4. Public Transport: Lack of, improve, lifestyles incompatible with PT, infrequent buses 5. Maintain character/community feel: Maintain rural aspect of roads; balance needs of environment community and infrastructure, noise pollutionPublic transport has improved since then and some more footpaths upgraded but as far as gridlock is concerned, not much has changed. VicRoads people at that meeting were predicting a decrease in traffic in Warrandyte as a result of proposed extension of the Eastern freeway etc. So much for VicRoads predictive modelling! “ That was all TEN years ago. Please, NO more investigations are needed – the problem is as clear as the nose on your face! We need another bridge, or two!Between 14,000 and 16,000 blocks of land are reported as being released each year in the outer growth areas, and some of these will be in the Whittlesea Shire area, Doreen, etc. The people occupying these blocks will need to travel for work and school. How many will need to do that via Warrandyte over the Yarra River via our country roads and sleepy villages? We need to be asking these questions of our authorities and demanding solutions right now! Some have suggested traffic lights, but there is still only ONE BRIDGE . Better to put the money towards an alternative crossing please. You can make a difference here by adding your voice to this petition and be part of the "People Power" that makes things work. Don't be shy, it doesn't hurt at all to sign up. :))
