Free Tiger, Bobby and Matthew

The Issue

Tiger, Bobby and Matthew are 2-year-old research cats that were bred at Colorado State University. What we (three volunteer advocates for the Beagle Freedom Project) know about them from documents provided to us by CSU is that they are a male grey tabby, a male long-haired orange, and a male grey and white known to CSU as #4466, #4478 and #4456. They came to their first study, an FIV vaccine trial, as kittens. The vaccine proved ineffective and they were infected with FIV during the course of the trial. They were then used to test whether two veterinary drugs, ATOPICA and Prednisolone, can be safely applied to FIV positive cats. And now they are being used to test the effects of chemotherapy on FIV positive cats. In addition to being exposed to viral infection and heavy drug treatment, Tiger, Bobby and Matthew are having blood drawn regularly, have been treated to produce excess saliva and have undergone surgical lymph node biopsy. We have asked to formally adopt Tiger, Bobby and Matthew, but were told that they will be euthanized and necropsied upon completion of testing for purposes of obtaining tissue samples. We believe that CSU has an ethical obligation to spare these animals. Non-lethal methods of tissue sampling are available. Tiger, Bobby and Matthew deserve the best possible retirement after everything they have endured, and CSU must release them and the other 8 cats in their study group to the animal lovers waiting to adopt them.
