First of all, a big THANK YOU to all those who have signed so far! We have just made it over 1,000 - every signature enables us to more pressure on the University so keep it up!
Some more financial stats for you from Tim Cave, Director of Finance at the SU. The grant from the university this year, excluding rent, totalled £421,321 - about enough to pay for staff pensions, officer salaries and Union House utilities. THAT IS IT - ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ELSE. The uni grant DOES NOT cover wellbeing services, the advice centre, the LCR, the Waterfront, Freshers Events, Club and Society grants, legal advice, etc. Every other service is funded through its social enterprises - e.g. Union, the Shop, ticket sales...
For me, this really reveals how chronic the problem is! At the moment, the SU can't make the amount of money it needs to survive and the grant most certainly will not make up the shortfall. If you value the services and the memories you have made at the SU, you will sign the petition and show the University how much our SU means to us!
Also, keep an eye out for the local news who are starting to pick up our story!
