Say NO to mandatory mask wearing in public
The Issue
On Monday, June 15, Ventura City Council voted 4-3 for masks to be worn in all Ventura businesses and government building. The language of the ordinance is still being written by the council but they hope to have it finalized before June 29.
By signing this petition, we can stop this ordinance from taking effect. Mandating masks for citizens of Ventura is more harmful than good and this is why:
1. Health
a. Wearing a mask lowers oxygen intake and causes us to breathe in stale air which is unhealthy, especially over a lengthy period of time.
b. Wearing a mask could limit our interaction with germs in general and that hinders our immune systems. Our bodies are created to interact and respond to germs to be healthy and stay healthy.
c. Wearing a mask doesn’t protect against viruses, especially the homemade masks or bandanas or shirts that are most commonly used. It is futile and inconsistent.
d. A face covering is simply a ploy to provide false comfort to those living in fear. Considering we are already keeping 6’ apart everywhere we go, even the CDC says the masks are intended for times when we can’t stay 6’ apart.
2. Human rights
a. Mandating citizens to wear something on their person is a violation of a person’s right to decide what is best for them and their family which is a slippery slope away from a free democracy.
b. Some people are unable to wear a mask, yet when they walk into an establishment they are immediately asked to wear a mask or leave. It forces them to either have a personal and uncomfortable conversation with a stranger about their health issues, which is against HIPAA, or they leave and no longer feel welcome to shop and eat in their own city.
To conclude, viruses and germs have always been and will always be around. We won’t ever be “safe” from them and quite honestly shouldn’t be for the sake of our immune system functionality.
If we mandate this now, when will enough be enough?
By this logic: never.
Mandating a face covering would condone living in fear and deliver a futile attempt at comfort just so people can “feel better” but longterm it hinders our interaction and eventually our emotional and physical health.
