Ventilator Vultures, Hospitals like JAIPUR ASIAN to stop exploiting Families
The Issue
Hansvik Saria, 8 years child who was kept on a ventilator for 6 days after brain dead on 14th March 2024 by ASIAN Hospital Jaipur closed his eyes on 19th March 2024. Hundreds of similar patients across India are in similar situations where patients and their families are looted with false promises. Notably, ASIAN hospital is renowned for its neurology services and is manned by doctors such as Dr. S.S. Ratnavat, Dr. N.K. Goyal and Dr. Saini. However, there are serious concerns regarding the conduct of the three mentioned doctors, who seem to be engaging in unethical practices, jeopardizing patient well-being and giving false hopes to the patient's loved one by treating a dead person on a ventilator.
The integrity of the medical profession and the well-being of patients are at stake due to the alleged misconduct and transparency within the hospital. Despite being a neurology speciality hospital, patients with various medical conditions are admitted indiscriminately. Furthermore, the alleged financial exploitation of patients, irrespective of their socio-economic status, raises serious ethical concerns and undermines trust in the medical establishment.
By raising awareness and initiating a public awareness campaign, we aim to prompt the Indian government and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to investigate these allegations thoroughly. It is crucial to hold accountable those responsible for jeopardizing patient safety and tarnishing the reputation of the medical profession.
Call to Action: GOI and the health ministry to set up a committee to look after these cases with the following responsibilities:
- Hold hospitals and doctors accountable for their misconduct and loot. The committee should review the evidence i.e. reason for keeping a patient on a ventilator (when another doctor has already discharged the patient to deathbed).
- Transparency in the entire process, from admission to discharge. Hospitals should publish masked data to capture the below information without sharing individual details:
- Hospital details
- Patient and doctor ID (masked)
- Patient admission time condition
- Patient discharge time condition
- Disease summary
- Treatment summary
- Amount charged
The above steps will reinstate faith in the medical profession and help people make an informed decision about what to do in case medical help is required. Additionally, by sharing our experiences and concerns, we hope to prevent further harm to patients and ensure that such incidents are not repeated in the future.
