Addition of Guardrails along the Pound River in Dickenson County, VA.

Addition of Guardrails along the Pound River in Dickenson County, VA.

The Issue

As many are aware the backroads of Dickenson County that run along Pound River are narrow, and simply not in great conditions. We, the concerned residents of Dickenson County are starting this petition in hopes to bring attention to the desperate need of the installation of guardrails along the backroads of Pound River.

Many people also know Saturday, August 22, 2020 a young resident of Dickenson County lost his life after a fatal car crash where his vehicle ended up in Pound River on Brush Creek Road. Dawson Smith is not the only individual who has lost their life on those narrow, guardrail-less roads. April 11, 2014 Roman Stanley Sr. also lost his life in a similar crash approximately 1.5 miles from the site of Dawson Smith’s crash. He too crashed down a steep embankment into Pound River.

These are just two examples of individuals whom have lost their lives from losing control of their vehicles on those narrow roads, and enviably crashing down the steep embankments into the deep Pound River.

Although their crashes probably could not be prevented entirely the outcome of the crashes could have ended very differently with the addition of the much needed guardrails. We can not change the past, but we can certainly change the future.

The deaths of Dawson, Roman, and anyone else whom we might be leaving out that may have also lost their lives at the hands of Pound River should be used to better support the reasoning of the great need for guardrails along the Pound River in our County.

We know the large expense guardrails can pose on Dickenson County, but if the installation of proposed guardrails prevents a grandfather, grandmother, mother, father, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, and so on from burying their loved one, and save just one life the money, labor, and efforts will be worth every ounce of energy put fourth.

Us, the living, must do the work our dead themselves cannot do. It is up to us to impose the change needed in our county to prevent anyone else from feeling the pain we have endured. As previously stated we cannot change the past, but we can definitely work to change the future. We, the petitioners want change!

We would also like to thank Joshua Evans- Willis District Supervisor for reaching out to VDOT, as well as actively supporting our cause.
