Hey everyone. For those of you who have just gotten your results back, congratulations on finishing high school - we hope you're proud of yourselves despite all the challenges.
We have some positive news to share.
Firstly, last week the VCAA admitted to another error, in the chemistry exam. This one was pretty blatant and got in the media so we were shocked it wasn’t addressed that night or the day after like with those couple errors in the maths exams that they acknowledged, but the fact that they eventually did do so suggests they felt under pressure. Your support for this petition would have helped.
The Victorian government has announced a review into how the VCAA runs VCE exams. We're pleased this review meets our key demands on what the review needs to look like: it must be independent and by an external body, and it must look at the entire VCE exam process, including the writing, administering and marking of exams.
The review will be conducted by Dr John Bennett who was CEO of NSW's Board of Studies and was involved in its successor, the NSW Education Standards Authority (the NESA). The NESA has already released the exam papers and the marking guidelines for this year's HSC (the NSW equivalent of VCE) exams, which the petition calls on the VCAA to do.
We have heard that the VCAA has uploaded many of the 2023 exam papers already. These include the exams for most of the business/economics and digital techologies subjects. We don't know if exam papers have been released this early in the past but we can't understand why the maths exams for example can't be released right now. Unlike the NESA, the VCAA hasn't released any marking schemes as far as we know.
We always knew it would be really hard to get improvements to the VCE exams process. However, thanks to your support and the media/political attention our demands have gotten, the signs are looking good that those of us taking VCE exams in the future could be less impacted by errors.
